Lee & Suzie wanted a very large canvas to depict the scene outside their home in the lively street of Bellenden Road. Their front room looks out to the street from the first floor, and they spend time with their two young children looking at the comings & goings in the street below. They wanted Mark to capture the life & vibrancy of the street including the elements of street furniture (rubbish bins, bicycles), the wall art & graffiti, as well as the variety of different people in this diverse community in Peckham.
Ruth commissioned Mark to produce a painting for her husband’s 40th birthday. The delightful subject matter was a view from Telegraph Hill looking to the City of London. Mark met the clients in the park to agree on the composition & the key elements that they wanted to be included in the piece. This shows the route they take when the children go to nursery; the family group are depicted on the path. They wanted the atmosphere of the park to reflect the different people using it, e.g. the dog walkers, the tree colours and the accuracy of the buildings were also important. One of the children asked that a cat be included, this can be seen to the left-hand side of the painting in the grass!
The initial commission was a landscape painting of the front garden and the house exterior, to capture the mature planting in the garden with its large variety of flowers and plants. The time of year was significant; early summer to portray the wisteria in full bloom with a classic summer sky. There were also important details of the house to include, such as the stained-glass window.
The clients were so pleased with the picture that they commissioned a second painting of the rear of the house & garden. This view was captured in autumn, reflecting a very different colour palette to the first piece. The tree to the left of the composition was a favourite of theirs, it had to be removed from the garden so they wanted a memory of it. The interior of the house was simplified & the light source was important to reflect this. The house was architecturally accurate, as was the placement of the garden furniture
Laura & her family had previously lived in Peckham and had now relocated to Manchester. She wanted a painting to reflect the happy times they spent in the area, specifically in this large urban park, as a memory of a point in time when the children were young. Mark took different elements of the featured landscape to make the composition to include all the aspects that were important to the client: the wisteria over the Victorian arch, the family area in the park with its distinctive fallen tree and the details of the houses & roads in the background. The figures in the painting were also important to Laura, not only her family group (seen to the left) but also the other characters in the park reflecting the diversity of the local community.
This urban landscape was one of the client’s businesses and he wanted a painting of this scene to display in his office. James liked the tree in autumn with the striking red foliage and he wanted Mark to depict local people on the street and the correct details of the shop front & the other buildings were important to be reflected accurately. James also had a print made of his painting.
Helen commissioned Mark to paint a family scene as a surprise present for her husband Adrian’s 40th birthday. This interior was a painting in acrylic & ink on paper, framed with art glass. Helen wanted Mark to capture the family group in a moment of time when the three children were young, in an informal & relaxed setting. Details of their clothes, toys & books were considered in the composition.
James commissioned a large oil painting of a summer scene in Peckham Rye Park, local to where he spends many hours with his family. He wanted his children in the painting, and then towards the end of the project Mark also included James & his wife. There were other specific elements that James wanted to include, such as the buses and for Mark to capture the busy atmosphere of the park showing the diverse community in Peckham.
This street scene of Deptford High Street was commissioned by a GP practice as a retirement gift for one of their colleagues, who had been practicing over 30 years in the area and was dedicated to helping his patient in the locality. Most of the figures in the painting are the staff members; using photos and sketches Mark placed them in the composition in different groups.
Nick & Jayne had lived in this beautiful period house for many decades and were now relocating to the North. They wanted Mark to capture the house in Spring with the tree in full blossom. Also, very important to them was the inclusion of their two dogs on the steps, plus a reminder of their previous pet Jacobi. He can just be seen peeping out of one of the windows.
Rhys & Emel had previously lived in one of the flats depicted here on Rye Lane and having moved away they wanted a reminder of their time in Peckham. The painting is based on a smaller less detailed piece they initially saw on Instagram; they are featured in the composition as are other aspects personal to them – e.g a good friend, animals & a bicycle. The other figures were chosen from characters appearing in a selection of Mark’s other works of the area.
This is a view of Peckham Rye Park showing the playground & café to the left. It was commissioned by Andrew as a surprise 40th birthday present for his wife Emma. Andrew & Emma lived very close to the park, and as they were moving away, he wanted this scene to be a reminder of their many happy years here with their two children. The family are shown to the right-hand side of the composition.
Mike wanted Mark to capture the stunning view of the City of London from this ancient woodland hill; the painting is a juxtaposition of the old and new. The season was important to Mike who wanted a winter scene with limited foliage so as not to obstruct the view and the buildings to be accurate. This was a ‘pure’ landscape with no figures in it, again at Mike’s request. Part of the composition was left entirely to Mark’s discretion, such as the sky and the foreground.
Four siblings commissioned Mark to paint individual portraits as a surprise present for their mother’s special birthday. This was a challenging project in lockdown for the siblings to sit in very difficult (& secret!) circumstances, and in fact for one of these Mark had to work from photographs alone. The four portraits are all very different in Mark’s interpretation with varying use of light and tone to portray their likenesses.
This was a surprise birthday present for Sophie’s husband. She had seen a post on Instagram of a bar scene that Mark had painted some years ago, the idea was to recreate this but with Sophie as the figure in the picture and with references to specific bottles of alcohol on the shelves. These would be recognisable to her husband who works in the drinks industry. This was also a challenge to compete in lockdown, with Sophie posing in the freezing cold in a backless dress in Mark’s front garden!
Wendy wanted a very large canvas to replace a painting currently hanging in her home. She was open a number of suggestions based on a series of very different ideas. Mark prepared small oil paintings in the same proportions to the large canvas size; a view of Wendy’s local park was decided upon, based on an atmospheric photograph that she had taken. It was important to Wendy that the colours in the painting complemented the décor in her room and that it would be mainly about the landscape, with a few figures within the composition.
